But you need to get to know them first, and a compliment is a great ice breaker. Advertisement If you’ve just moved in somewhere new and you want to get to know the people you live around, Brittney Morgan at Apartment Therapy suggests you pay them a compliment when you see them: You know how great it feels when someone takes the time to notice you and say something nice, and it’s an easy way to start a conversation. A simple “Oh, I love your shoes!” or “That’s a great outfit!” when you pass them in the hallway can get you chatting. You can also show interest in things they like. If they’re carrying an instrument when they walk by one day, ask them how long they’ve been playing. If they’re carrying a basketball, ask them if they have a favorite team. Or even just say something nice about the dog they’re walking. You don’t have to have the same interests, but showing curiosity will give you a chance to introduce yourself. Now if they’re having a loud party and you go to ask them to be a little quieter, they may just invite you in instead.
